Abingdon Lock & River

5 SECTION I. Abingdon to Grove Junction Canal Entrance & Abingdon Lock SU 469966 Visited:- 7.5.60:31.5.60:18.6.60:22.9.60. Access:- Photograph Nos: 280, 273, 261, 281, 346 Observations: Site entrance of lock now occupied by a small nissan-type building (see 280, 261). The lock was located approximately 40 yards northeast of Boat house on river's edge (see 280). 25" plan consulted at Borough Surveyors office (31/5) shows part of Boat Ho projecting over river, possibly had some canal purpose. Indentation of river bank ///ting canal entrance is clearly visible (280). "Old Anchor" Inn on riverside may have been resort of boatmen. SW of lock site is large house in walled grounds (no wall on C[anal]. side)

Abingdon Wharf

6 "Kingsland Lodge", possibly wharfinger's house. (22.9.60) Observed name 'Wharf House' on one of the gate pillars. This visit by Eve and myself, was to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Canal's opening. There was no one else in sight, and nothing out of the ordinary in the town, despite my letters to the mayor (which were not answered).

Abingdon Wharf & Basin

7 2. Abingdon Town Wharf and Basin SU495966 Visited:- 7.5.60: 31.5.60: Access: Photograph Nos: 274 Observations: Basin, immediately west of lock, has been filled in: it is now a grassed over area which defines shape and extent. Line west from the Basin is shown by a hedge parallel to Caldecott Road: about half way along this road, it disappears under a row of houses fronting the road, which continue down to the A34 junction.

8 3. Caldecott Bridge SU 487965 Visited:- 7.5.60: 31.5.60: 18.6.60: 22.9.60 Access:- *Track from A.34 on W bank at farm Photograph Nos:- Observations:- Bridge no longer exists but there is a very slight hump in the A34 at the crossing point. Farm is still there, also row of small cottages southwest of bridge (doubtful authenticity). There was a wharf ('Tythe') west of bridge on south bank. *Line re-appears about 200 yards west of bridge and is embanked: double hedged and very overgrown: bed accessible in one or two places, with aquatic-type plants still growing in it.

Faulkner Log Page 009

9 4. Caldecott Lock SU 484965 Visited:- 31.5.60: Access:- Rough TP scramble from SU 482963 Photograph Nos:- Observations:- Very overgrown embankment and lock site cannot be traced exactly. Possibly it was where concrete block house (war construction?) is placed right on line. There is a second one of these about 400 yards west, but standing on north bank - some adjacent masonry may be significant. (See note re SU 482963). Average height of embankment in this region is app. 5’. TP only a vague trace and very difficult to follow. Dense hedge growth.

10 5. Occupation Bridge SU 482963 Visited:- 7.5.60: 31.5.60: 22.9.60: 16.8.64. Access:- Minor road (drivable) leading off A34 Photograph Nos:- 262, 263, 264, 275 Observations:- Type of bridge not specified on 1880 map: probably was brick, the hump in the road remains, but line filled in and no trace of parapet. On road verge here is large stone block from a lock (Caldecott?) showing (a) worked rebate for gate, (b) leaded-in both for ground paddle frame mounting, (c) worked square hole through for paddle rod. Embankment still evident. (see 275): Line is a little more open to south for a short distance. (22.9.60) Local fill in has been done, stone block has gone, and area cleaned, hedge torn down, etc (16.8.64) infill now grassed over etc..

Faulkner Log Page 011

11 6. Occupation Bridge SU 479961 Visited:- 7.5.60: 31.5.60: 22.9.60 Access:- Continuation of (5) Photograph Nos:- Observations:- Bridge is decidedly humped, and low masonry parapet remnant visible. Line still embanked, and probably bridge had fairly high arch, now filled in. Very densely hedged. Building to the north-northeast was known as "New Cut Mill" (Corn), water power from River Ock.

12 7. Occupation Bridge SU 457945 Visited:- 31.5.60 Access:- Bridle way from Drayton (drivable but v. bumpy - permission needed) Photograph Nos:- 276, 277 Observations:- 1880 map gives this as swing bridge (probably timber). Crossing now culverted, as due to infill, line has diminished to a mere ditch: this is in a non-banked section. It is fairly and clearly seen in either northeast or southwest direction.

13 8. Drayton Lock SU 452940 Visited:- 18.6.60 Access:- Bridle way from Drayton, drivable abt 1/2 m: // v. dense green lane scramble. Photograph Nos:- Observations:- Lock site marks re-commencement of embanking: chamber in high mound, very overgrown, but can be seen from lock tail where bridleway crosses line. Apparently no gate remains left.

14 9. Steventon Lock and *Basin SU 445932 Visited:- 31.5.60 Access:- From SU 441929 (10) along overgrown rems of TP, N Bank. // walk Photograph Nos:- 278 Observations:- Lock chamber gateless and very densely overgrown by trees of some height, and thick hedge. Parts can be discerned: partly walled across at top end, where ground culvert could be just seen. Small footpath bridge across lower end as per 1880 map, but not on 1:25000. Extent of 'basin' seen through hedges. Uncertain whether this was a wharf or a passing point, as no land track of any consequence joining it (for goods transport) is shown on either map. (27.5.64) *Concluded that this is a "winding hole".

15 Road Bridge (Cow Common) SU 441929 Visited:- 7.5.60: 31.5.60: 18.6.60 (no stop): 22.9.60: 16.8.64. Access:- from Steventon village Photograph Nos:- 265, 266, 267 Observations:- Bridge is fairly substantial structure with very high arch (no towpath through). Constructed block in course, with rubble core, flanking walls, and dressed stone coping to parapets. 'Roman' arch in brick on stone piers (see 266. 267). All in sound condition, moderate road traffic observed at time of visits. Parapet to canal bed = 25 feet approximately. 1880 map shows swing bridge for occupation crossing at this point: presumably road importance increased and necessitated better br. dating probably late 19th century. Old piece of timber embedded in canal

C.E. Faulkner Field Excursions 1958-66

Faulkner Log Page 016

16 bank on northeast side of bridge may be associated with original swing bridge. Line in low embankment. North east is fairly open for about 200 yards but more overgrown to southwest. (22.9.60) no change except for seasonal expansion of growth. (16.8.64) little change - slight in overgrowth to east - tree on west now taller: parapets damaged: line to west filled and cultivated for a long way. (17.10.65) note in RCHS (Railway & Canal Historical Society) journal that bridge demolished and road levelled - material used to fill in canal line for some distance.

17 11. Ardington Marsh Lock SU 429919 Visited:- 6.8.60: 26.8.62: 2.9.62. Access:- TP from SU 424903 to rly:* wch cross then bear R. accross field: not E.Hanney FP. Photograph Nos:- 474 Observations:- Chamber in substantial embankment, partly visible and accessible, no gates: lock very deep, estimate fall, say 10 feet. Embankment about 6 feet above general field level. The line curve west of lock, south to railway, is very noticeable. No trace of railway bridging, and line immediately north of railway extremely overgrown for some distance. (26.8.62 & 2.9.62) Access possible to line bed above top gates site. Masonry fairly good: top culverts can be seen

18 12. Ardingtonmead Farm SU 426913 Visited:- 7.5.60: 6.8.60: 26.8.62: 2.9.62 Access:- TP from SU 424903 (easiest) or from ardington lane, FP access fields Photograph Nos:- 268, 269, 270 Observations:- 1:25000 map gives name as 'Canalside Cottages'. Line well defined very tall trees either bank. Footbridge (modern timber) crosses here from towpath to farm. Small one storey cottage beside towpath between farm and railway (apparently inhabited, 6/8/60), but connection with canal not obvious, building style does not seem of period. (10.9.60) learned from owner of [a house on the west bank, near Grove,] (old inhabitant of Grove) that this was the cottage of last lock keeper [Not so; this was probably Uncle Jim's cottage. See article by Chris Naish. dgs.], beat extended from Ardington Marsh (?) to Grove Top, junction Wantage Branch. Name J Steele. (26.8.62 & 2.9.62) No appreciable change.

19 Ardington Top Lock SU 426911 Visited:- 31.5.60: 6.8.60: 26.8.62: 2.9.62. Access:- TP from SU 424903 Photograph Nos:- 279, 538, 539, 542 Observations:- Densely overgrown, but chamber crossed by single-plank bridge at top, enabling fair view: no gates at top, but remains of bottom pair seen. Line broadens for passing place or lay-by above lock. Ruins of cottage adjacent to lock, but inaccessible for growth, and original shape uncertain - probably lock keeper's. Line quite well defined above lock. (see 279) (26.8.62 & 2.9.62) No appreciable change. Cottage more dilapidated.

20 Occupation Bridge (Neville's fm) [Pinmarsh Bridge] SU 424903 Visited:- 7.5.60: 31.5.60: 6.8.60: 28.8.60: 10.9.60: 26.8.62: 16.8.64. Access:- Photograph Nos:- 271, 328 Observations:- 1880 // swing Br carrying // track, [Grove Park Drive] but now is a 3rd class road. filled in and culverted. Canal line both sides fairly clear (see 271), and good access by towpath to a fair length of line, in either direction. No embanking for about 500 yards in this region. (2.9.62) NB: Between here and 13 [Grove Bottom Lock] is a small cut in north bank, leading into a closed basin on other side of towpath, in which are growing reeds etc. Purpose unknown. (16.8.64) No change. [Note: Faulkner wrongly labelled this as Neville's Farm Bridge, which is shown on the 1880 map as a swing bridge, which, indeed, it was. But Neville's Farm Bridge was, in fact, some 500 yards further down the line, and its remains can still be found. 34 Special notes etc. on Section 1 (May 1961: based on 1960 observations) 1. TRACEABILITY: Good generally: obliteration at Abingdon and Drayton Field, filling at Grove: some portions can now be regarded as virtually inaccessible due to years of vegetation growth, but line can be found at all crossings, and exploration (sometimes rough) can be made from many of them. 2. CONDITION: In parts clear and open to Grove Bottom Lock; in general fairly densely hedged both sides. Much of line contains or receives enough moisture to grow rushes etc.. 3. CHARACTERISTICS: Section not heavily locked, total fall Grove Junction - Abingdon 102 feet in about 7¾ miles. Country is open and rather flat. There are variations of contour involving embanking in some places to 12 feet high. This accounts for undisturbed nature of section generally (farmers cannot plough infill as where the line is at field level), and perhaps

C.E. Faulkner Field Excursions 1958-66

Faulkner Log Page 035

35 also for time taken to construct this part. No cuttings, except for about a quarter of a mile near Marcham. 4. LOCKS: All accessible, can be seen except (a) Abingdon (b) Caldecott. Ruined gates remain at Ardington Top, Spirit and Grove Common. No paddle gear left anywhere. Grove Bottom, Smallmarsh and Grove Top filled in more or less. Masonry and brickwork generally fair (Ardington Marsh best). 5. BRIDGES: Mostly timber swing or draw type, all gone, //tings filled and some culverted. Fixed Bridges probably at Caldecott (A34), New Cut Mill, 'Cow Common' and Grove (A338). Only Cow Common intact, probably because too much trouble to demolish, there are long approach embankments both sides. (see page 55) 6. BUILDINGS: Best period original is erstwhile canalside inn at Grove (A338) west // of // cottage, less characteristic. Ruined cottage at Ardington Top, and later small building on towpath nearby. Wharf House' Abingdon likely mid-19" century rebuild, similar Longcot new (wharf?). Same builder? But as good // as Wantage's. 7. REMARKS: No milestones found, they may be there but search impossible because of dense Growth. * But see Sec.I.5.

64 Special notes etc. on Section III [Wantage to South Marston] (June 1961: based on 1960 & 1961 observations) 1. TRACEABILITY: Line generally not quite so good as Section I [Abingdon to Wantage]. All crossings can be found; in some cases exploration therefore is very limited: dense undergrowth. 2. CONDITION: Fair where embanking or cutting exists; otherwise much obliteration; especially West of Grove Top Lock to Barwell Bridge, between West Challow and Uffington, East of Shrivenham Draw Bridge, and Longleaze Farm to South Marston Top Lock. About quarter mile east of Stockham Bridge (q.v.) has water. Very overgrown: West Challow, Uffington Arch, below Longcot old wharf. Reasonably clear elsewhere. 3. CHARACTERISTICS: Less embanking than Section I and possibly more cutting. (v. Stockham bridge & Shrivenham arch et seq.) Line is rising into quasi-downland country, more contour variations and directional changes (Brindley system!) especially Uffington & Shrivenham. 4. LOCKS: Six only this section, of these Longcot Top and all South Marston flight (4) are gone. Longcot

Faulkner Log Page 065

65 Bottom perhaps exists, but overgrowth too dense to verify. BRIDGES: Thirteen fixed road bridges on main line plus one on Longcot Branch, and two railway bridges. Best remaining (for obvious reasons) is G.W.R. at SU 218875: that at Longcot filled, but some brickwork remaining. Best road bridge is Shrivenham Arch (intact with towpath under it). Traces of original masonry at East Challow, Uffington (Wharf), Longcot Old Wharf, and Bridge B4508. Remainder probably small brick type; all filled and demolished: slight humping at Stockham and Bowles's. No swing or draw bridges, all crossing filled (but passable) BUILDINGS: Good contemporary wharf cottages at Old Longcot and Uffington, Bourton group (q.v), and mid 19th century Wharf House at Longcot new, with row of small cottages (v. abingdon: ormond terrace). Good lock cottages at Longcot Top and South Marston Top (this with later additions). 7. REMARKS: Milestone (Semington 39) found west of Kingston Common Bridge. Various WBCC boundary marker stones seen at South Marston wharf site.

71 SUB-SECTION IV A. (Swindon Wharf to West Leaze Farm). Visited: 19.6.60; 4.6.61; 27-30.8.62. Access: - . Photograph Nos. - Swindon, a village when the Canal was built nearby, grew to be a large town during the 19th Cent., as a result of its choice by Brunel & Gooch as a site for the G.W. Rly Works. Therefore it was the only large town along the Canal which had the waterway in its midst; and in consequence the further growth of the town was always influenced by the Canal, inasmuch as the latter, before its abandonment, had to be bridged whenever new street layouts crossed it. The effect of the Canal line was to leave at most places, a clear ‘space’ right through the town; and although at the time of writing (26.8.69) it is being further obliterated by development work, yet enough is left for clear identification of its course and effect [sic]. However, the course of change is such, that even items and features non-existent in 1880 (6” O.S. WILTS SH. 15) are now being demolished! This part of the line is here commented upon as a special sub-section, for the sake of clarity and continuity. (Features not shown on SH. 15 are *). Refer also to letter from S/don Boro Engr. Dated 27.6.61.

73 From Wharf, line is well-defined space between walled buildings; abt. 50’ wide w. made-up T.P. as right-of-way: to 6. York Rd. Bridge [P. 240, 373, 374].* line narrows to pass beneath; a simple plate girder + underdeck, on wing walls and abutments of ‘railway’ brick, w. steps from TP 2 sides to road levels. (3.6.61) Demolition in progress. Steelwork gone & abutment walls being broken down. Rubble foundation centre of approach embanking thus visible. (see p.72). Line from here abt. 30 yd. rubbish, then becomes: 7. Fleming Way [P 290; 375] *. A metalled road w. pavements & lighting (Garrard factory), abt. 500 yd. long; entered by road from either Newcastle St. or end of Medgbury Rd.; W. end terminates (3.6.61) in line of posts, barring traffic; where line again becomes rough grassed space,

'WHALE' GONE, BUT NOT BR. still no TP as far as: 8. ‘Whale’ Bridge [242, 243, 291, 513] blt. prob. abt. 1910, similarity to (6): “Whale Hotel” adjacent, Medgbury Rd, late 19th Cent. or early 20th; access from old TP in steps, but doubtful if canal use; line continues under Br., as open space (w. hardcore dump for future use), past remains of demolished TP side canal Inn “Golden Lion” (dem. 1958) ; ‘Whale’ Br. Scheduled for demolition late 1961. * 30.8.62. ‘Whale’ gone, but not Br. 9. Wellington Street Br. [244]. This was a fixed steel-girder Br. crossing at end of W. St., built 1881 demolished in 1920, probably as a result of work on (10) below. 10. Swindon Junction with N. 75 The “Union Hotel”, demolished 1959, now (1961) represented by open site on NW side of junc. Main line past Junc narrows slightly (Albion Street) to: 11. Bridge Street crossing [377, 490] this was a lifting bridge, w. centre section moving vertically, removed about 1918 (see 10 above). ‘Golden Lion’ (Q.v.) was adjacent; from here the line contracts to a foot walk, as far as: 12. Milton Road Bridge [P 246, 247] is well preserved and rather ornate in character; moulded parapets & turned balustraded, on road elevations, and stone arch. Built about 1889 as part of a “brighter Swindon” scheme. The area adjacent was described at the time as the “Little Venice of Swindon”(!). The Black Br. (see O.S. 1880) was sited abt. 200 ft w. of Milton Rd. Br. (opp line of Chester Street), demolished

76 in 1890’s; line continues as open grassy track, w. few trees, to: 13. Cambria Road Bridge [P 250] brick arch w. steel framework, the latter probably added 1892 when Br. Was widened. Cast iron rubbing strips w. rope grooves can (1960) be seen here. 14. A point between (13) & (14) [P 494] looking E. towards (present) A420 crossing. No topographical information as to bridging there. 15. M. & S.W.J Railway Bridge [P253:256] This built with a “skewed” arch relative to central line: and in good state. 16. ‘West Leaze’ Aqueduct [P 254]. Small intact structure carrying line over a brook, name unknown.

77 Note: Swindon lay on the canal’s summit pound: & it is thought that part of the line’s water supply was obtained from Coate Water. Very diligent search however failed to discover the actual feed-in point. See also Section VI nos. 9 & 10. (22.7.89) It is presumed that the above together with any sluice gates etc. most probably vanished as a result of agricultural operations.

Small lock cottage, in dilapidated condition & apparently uninhabited (F.P & F.B. from Chaddington Lane as per map, do not now exist).

Faulkner Log Page 083

83 Special Notes, &c, on Section IV (April 63: based on observations 60-62): 1. Traceability. Fairly good outside Swindon: but E. of S/don much less so than W. The line through Swindon (although not canal-like and more) is quite obvious, because of the way in which the line originally divided the town: although converted by S.B.C. to other uses (roads, etc.) it has nowhere built on, in the town. 2. Condition. Coverage w. of S/don: usual shapelessness, & varying amounts of growth. E. of S/don, much obliterated. On short section W. of Hay Lane Whf (q.v.) contains a fair amount of water, but ‘channel’ restricted by rushes, &c. 3. Characteristics. None special; the line follows a course of gentle curves across the pasture & arable of the ‘Swindon plateau’; a fair number of crossings, and the line never very far from main roads.

Faulkner Log Page 084

84 4. Locks. None (summit level). 5. Bridges. (a) outside Swindon. 2 good (illegible) bridges remain (see 4 & 21); remainder of crossing points mostly occ. Tracks (swing or draw), but one or two masonry (e.g. Hay Lane Whf), none other remaining. (b) in Swindon. Bridges were numerous and of permanent types (see Sub-Sections), at date (4/63). (6) York Road Br. gone, & line made into road from S’don Whf. 8 ‘Whale’ Br. (uncertain, but, 8/62, was still there, although ‘whale’ gone. Very extensive re-construction of canal line in Swindon of recent years. (28.6.69)

Faulkner Log Page 085

85 6. Buildings. No buildings known to have had direct connection w. canal remain in Swindon. Wharf Houses at Wroughton & Hay Lane (the latter a v.g. example of the early 19th Cent). Lock cottage at Chaddington. 7. Remarks. (none).

106 Special Notes &c on Section V (based on 1961-1962 observations: June 62) 1. Traceability. Generally fairly good away from built-up districts. Swindon portions (q.v.) obliterated; but owing to use as public right-of-way, it can be followed fairly easily. Line accessible at most crossings elsewhere. 2. Condition. Not excessively over-grown between S/don and Cricklade; rather more so towards Latton. V. good in Moredon Hill area s of Power Station. 3. Characteristics: Locking tended to concentrate in groups, viz. Swindon & Moredon, with single locks well spaced-out between these places. Fall to Latton. Heavy shelf-and-bank work round S side Moulden Hill; deep approach cutting to S. ent. C/lade Tl; otherwise most construction seems to have been relatively easy (c.f. cost less than estimate! Vide Canals of Southern England pp 158-160), also see Nos. 4: 5 : 17 re Tunnel & Ray

107 (Sept 89) Cd find no trace of the 2 Aqueducts between Latton and Cricklade. aqueduct. 4. Locks. Of 12 on this line, only 4 can be certainly located; viz. Latton?, Hayes Knoll, Pry, Crosslanes; and of these, only Pry and Hayes Knoll sufficiently to see actual masonry vestiges. The site of Moredon Lock can be conjectured from TP walk. 5. Bridges. Only remaining in occupation crossing at Farfield Lane (No. 10 q.v.), rest either were wood or brick (poss. Moredon & various in Swindon; no traces left except road humps (c.f. 129 Special Notes on Section VI (May 1965, based on observations 62-65). 1. Traceability. In general, good; line v. little built over, apart from Wootton Bassett. Since there are fewer crossings on this section, accessibility not so good. 2. Condition. Growth in general rather more than average, but less disturbance. South of Dauntsey, line is usually quite distinct (especially good 400 yd S of Charlecutt Hill Br.), but tends to overgrowth more at Stanley end. 3. Characteristics. In this section at Sevenlocks, is the largest flight and the greatest direct change of level. A marked (but usual at the date) feature is the contour-following from W. Bassett to Stanley.

Faulkner Log Page 130

130 4. Locks. (see also 3) The heaviest locked section. 15, Chaddington to Stanley Junc. Sites or remains nearly all visible. 5. Bridges. None remaining, but all sites available. Partial traces exist in some instances. 6. Buildings; This section v. good in that respect. Lock houses at Chaddington, Dunnington, 7-locks, (possible) Foxham. Wharf houses and/or buildings at Vastern (for W. Basst), Dauntsey, (possibly) Foxham. 7. Remarks. Tockenham Reservoir (N.V.) seems to have had a retaining dam at one end. Although feeding below summit pound, it was probably meant to help with the heavy ...

Lock chamber remaining, less gates, but 2 grd. paddle frames existing, line below lock fairly good to occ. Br. Branch ended at head of lock, craft locked up to R. Marden & wharf. Sluice gates on river provided to hold up water to get level for wharfage & locking. Also, water cd. then be given to the Brch & main line (eventually) via the lock. View as Plate in ‘C.S.E.’ not now visible owing to well-established tree, &c. Wharf alongside R. Marden; Wharf Ho. (Hadfield: Canals of Southern England)

137 Special Notes on Section VII (based on observations May 1965) Traceability. Generally fair; accessibility poor in places, esp. vicinity Sewage Fm. Condition. Average, one good portion, some obliterations, but mostly usual. Characteristics. A comparatively short 3 mile branch. Fairly easy contour engineering, but tunnel needed through rising ground at Black Dog Hill. Locks. 3 in all, rise to Calne. Remains are visible. Bridges. None remaining; sites only. Buildings. Wharf House and other canal buildings at Calne. Traces of cottage at Conigre Locks.
