John Smith and John Bosville built Top lock including an arched tail bridge in 1796, using 229,000 bricks and cost £172 2s 2d.

In 1800, William Large had to take down and rebuild the side of the lock at a cost of £50.

The lock had a fall of 8 feet and 9 inches.
