(farm track); Photograph Nos: - ; Observations: from Jay’s Bridge (ST929717), bridge filled in, but old parapet work can be seen at road level; line to W filled abt. 200 yd., then reappears as well-defined rush-grown line in cutting of varying depth as far as could be gone, Deep Cutting Bridge inaccessible, existence therefore not confirmed. Line to E filled & v. confused as to direction (Access at wharf end from Town, but unable to locate Wharf site or House with any certainty). Tunnel definitely noted on 1880 map.

Pewsham Locks (3), ST936710; Visited: 19.5.65; Access: from Middle Lodge Farm via Jay’s Bridge (see 5); Photograph Nos.: - ; Observations: Top lock accessible, chamber in reasonable state, no gates; middle lock practically all collapsed; bottom is inaccessible due to dense vegetation, therefore state could not be determined. All locks very overgrown in dense coppice. Extreme care needed in venturing into this! (According to 1880 OS, these locks had side ponds.)

146 9. Rey Mill Bridge, ST690926; visited but no notes made; I recall that the bridge had been filled up, & canal line existed only as a grassy hollow in field beside hedge (29.8.69).

Lacock Lock & Wharf, ST681936; Visited: 14.9.59; 17.5.65; 20.8.66; Access: off Chippenham-Melksham Rd.; Photograph Nos. 232; Observations: on 1st visit, lock cottage of period, below road level, lock immediately S of road bridge, chamber dammed (no gates) and full of water. “Bell” P.H. probably resort of boatmen; also small stable bldgs., see 230, on 2nd visit, cottage(s) in process of modernisation, lock chamber being filled with rubbish. Line of wharf now part of private premises, cd. not get in, line to N of road clearly seen in fairly deep cut, although overgrown, part has water in.

Part of Bridge parapet at Forest road junction cd be seen (17.5.65); Wharf House is at A365 crossing, road is humpy here, but wharf area must be now overbuilt; was situated S side of Devizes Road adjacent to Bridge.
